Behind these tools is a bigger idea that researchers are working toward: Artificial General Intelligence, often called AGI. AGI is the name for a possible future form of AI that could be much more flexible and powerful than today’s tools. We don’t know if or when it will arrive, but the idea matters because it helps parents and teachers ask better questions about the future students are entering.

What Is AGI?

Artificial General Intelligence, often called AGI, refers to AI systems that could perform a wide range of intellectual tasks, much like humans do.

Today’s AI tools are powerful, but they are still specialized. They can generate text, summarize information, analyze data, create images, or help write code. But they still operate within limits. They do not truly understand the world in the broad, flexible way humans do, and they can struggle when faced with completely new situations.

AGI would be different. Instead of being trained mainly for specific tasks, an AGI system could potentially:

  • Learn new skills on its own
  • Move easily between subjects
  • Apply knowledge in situations it had never been explicitly taught
  • Analyze complex problems across fields like science, medicine, engineering, and economics
  • Draw connections humans might miss
  • Propose solutions people may never have considered

In theory, AGI could learn and adapt across many kinds of tasks, rather than simply repeat patterns from a narrow training set. That is the basic idea, though experts still disagree about how close we are to building anything like it.

Some experts believe that once machines reach human-level intelligence, they could eventually move beyond it. Computers can already process information far faster than humans.
